Arlo Camera Default Login Credentials
Arlo cameras are some of the most popular wireless security cameras on the market. They were made to operate on a cloud platform. Arlo cameras are favored by home and small-business users because they are easy to set up and use, they come in battery powered options, and they are easily accessed remotely via their app and web portal. However, the security paradigm for Arlo is different from IP cameras which require a web connection using long-term factory password for each unit.
This lack of the default IP address, username and password can cause headaches for users looking online for default credentials. The fact is that there are no default IP, username or passwords in Arlo cameras and they are not traditional ONVIF or CCTV cameras. Knowing how login, network connection and ports all work together can make the camera easier to troubleshoot, use a firewall or plan out an integration. This article breaks down what the actual defaults are and how it should work in a straightforward manner.
Default IP
There is no static default IP Address that can be entered to a browser with an Arlo camera. Arlo cameras and Arlo base stations are assigned a DHCP IP address from the local network. This IP address can change at any time, and especially after reboot or restart of the local network.
Most systems require each Arlo camera to connect over Wi-Fi to an Arlo base station or hub, with only the base station or hub visible as a client on the network. Some newer Arlo models can connect directly to Wi-Fi without a base station, but the IP address they are assigned is not meant to be directly accessible to users.
- No factory default IP address
- IP is assigned automatically by the router
- Local IP is not used for browser login
Default Username
Arlo Cameras will not have a default local username such as admin or user. There is no web interface built in that will require a username at the device level. The Arlo account that was created during setup is responsible for authorising the device, the account email address is used as a username.
This eliminates the risk of credential-based attacks on most regular IP cameras. Permissions, camera sharing and device management is performed at the account level, not through local usernames.
- No default device username
- Login is tied to Arlo account email
- User access is managed in the app or web portal
Default Password
Nothing is preinstalled on an Arlo camera, nor is there a default password. When creating an Arlo account when setting up the camera for the first time, a password is generated for you. You need that password to view recordings, live video or access your settings via the app or web.
Once reset, Arlo is back to the factory with no existing password. It will require to be paired again with an Arlo account. Normal account recovery procedures like email recovery are used for recovering password which means even if someone else will have physical access to the device, security isn't compromised.
- No universal factory password
- Password is user defined
- Resetting the camera does not reveal credentials
Default Port
Arlo cameras and base stations will all securely connect to the Arlo cloud servers using outbound connections. The main port which this occurs on is SSL HTTPS port 443, which enables encryption of video streams, commands, and notifications.
In certain scenarios, other outbound ports may be opened for media relay/peer to peer connections, but are handled seamlessly by the Arlo system. Customers will not have to handle port forwarding or open inbound ports on your router to access your cameras remotely. This helps ease the burden of deploying cameras in restrictive network environments.
- Main port: 443 HTTPS
- No inbound ports required
- Firewall friendly cloud communication
