IP67 is one of the most common protection ratings found on smartphones, wearables, industrial devices, and outdoor electronics. It indicates a strong level of dust resistance and a reliable degree of water protection, but it is not completely waterproof in all conditions. Understanding what IP67 actually guarantees — and what it does not — is essential when choosing equipment for everyday use, industry, or harsh environments.

Meaning

The IP67 rating comes from the IEC 60529 standard, where “IP” stands for Ingress Protection.

• The first digit 6 refers to complete dust protection. A device with this rating does not allow dust or solid particles to enter under normal conditions.
• The second digit 7 defines the level of water protection. This allows a device to survive temporary immersion in water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.

IP67 ensures strong overall durability, but it does not mean the device can be used underwater for extended periods or at greater depths.

Limitations

Even though IP67 is considered a high rating, it has certain restrictions:

1. It is designed only for temporary immersion, not for swimming or diving.
2. Water pressure increases significantly even at shallow depths, so deeper immersion can cause leaks.
3. Saltwater, soap, chlorine, and high-temperature water may reduce protection or damage seals.
4. Over time, seals naturally degrade due to wear, impact, or aging.
