IP67 Waterproof Rating: Meaning and Comparison

IP67 is one of the most common protection ratings found on smartphones, wearables, industrial devices, and outdoor electronics. It indicates a strong level of dust resistance and a reliable degree of water protection, but it is not completely waterproof in all conditions. Understanding what IP67 actually guarantees — and what it does not — is essential when choosing equipment for everyday use, industry, or harsh environments.

Meaning

The IP67 rating comes from the IEC 60529 standard, where “IP” stands for Ingress Protection.

  • The first digit 6 refers to complete dust protection. A device with this rating does not allow dust or solid particles to enter under normal conditions.
  • The second digit 7 defines the level of water protection. This allows a device to survive temporary immersion in water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.

IP67 ensures strong overall durability, but it does not mean the device can be used underwater for extended periods or at greater depths.

Limitations

Even though IP67 is considered a high rating, it has certain restrictions:

  1. It is designed only for temporary immersion, not for swimming or diving.
  2. Water pressure increases significantly even at shallow depths, so deeper immersion can cause leaks.
  3. Saltwater, soap, chlorine, and high-temperature water may reduce protection or damage seals.
  4. Over time, seals naturally degrade due to wear, impact, or aging.
  5. The rating applies to fresh water, not chemicals or liquids with additives.

This means IP67 is suitable for accidental exposure but not for long-term or extreme water use.

Applications

Devices rated IP67 are commonly used in environments where dust and occasional water exposure are likely. Examples include:

  1. Smartphones and smartwatches that may be exposed to rain or accidental drops into water
  2. Outdoor IoT sensors and weather-station components
  3. Ruggedized handheld tools
  4. Bicycle computers and GPS trackers
  5. Small industrial devices that need dust protection and occasional wash-downs

IP67 strikes a practical balance between strong durability and everyday usability.

IP67 vs. IP68

Both ratings offer complete dust protection, but the water resistance level differs:

  • IP67 = temporary immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes
  • IP68 = immersion beyond 1 meter with manufacturer-specified conditions

IP68 is more robust and often used for higher-end smartphones, dive-capable electronics, and outdoor equipment that may face deeper or longer exposure to water. IP67 is good for accidental immersion but not intended for prolonged underwater use.

IP67 vs. IP65

The difference lies in the type of water protection:

  • IP65 protects against low-pressure water jets, such as rain or light washing.
  • IP67 protects against temporary immersion, not jets.

IP67 is stronger in immersion scenarios, while IP65 is more suitable for devices exposed to active water spray or cleaning.

IP67 vs. IP69

IP69 (or IP69K) is among the highest levels of water protection:

  • Designed to withstand high-pressure, high-temperature water jets
  • Often used in industrial machinery, food processing, and automotive components

IP67 is not intended for extreme pressure or high-temperature cleaning. While IP67 protects against immersion, IP69 is superior against forceful water jets and harsh environments.

FAQs

No. IP67 supports temporary immersion, not continuous underwater use. Swimming can expose the device to pressure changes, chemicals, and movement that exceed the rating.
Yes. The “6” rating means full dust protection. As long as the seals remain intact, dust cannot enter the device.
No. High-pressure or hot water jets can easily damage an IP67 seal. Ratings like IP66 or IP69 are required for such environments.
For immersion, yes — IP67 is superior. However, IP65 is better for resisting water jets. The choice depends on your usage conditions.
